Sustainable freight transport programmes and partnerships

SmartWayTM - The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) launched SmartWay in 2004 as an innovative brand that represents environmentally cleaner, more fuel-efficient transportation options. Through SmartWay, the EPA promotes the adoption of advanced fuel-saving technologies and operational practices that reduce CO2, NOX and PM.

Objectif CO2 - The French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development and Spatial Planning (MEEDDAT) and the French Environment and Energy management Agency (ADEME), together with the main French road transport and logistics associations launched in 2008 “Objectif CO2. Les transporteurs s’ engagent”. This voluntary Public Private programme to reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector provides a framework for transport companies to commit to reducing their fuel consumption and CO2 reduction.

Climate TransAct was an initiative to create a SmartWay like programme in Europe. It started in the beginning of 2009 with a broad European stakeholder process in 2009, initiated by the Green Logistics Consultants Group, co-funded by the French Environment and Energy Agency ADEME and strongly supported by the industry. This broad expert and stakeholder consultation process confirmed the need and significant interest in a common European approach and resulted in the creation of the SmartWay Europe Working Group of leading companies from several industries.

After a broad European public and private stakeholder process and the evaluation and testing of monitoring and reporting models by a group of large Logistics Service Providers and Shippers, a group of large companies decided in 2011 to continue the initiative.

Green Freight Europe is an industry-led programme driving reductions of carbon emissions from road freight in Europe. It establishes a methodology for measuring and reporting carbon emissions and enables improved procurement decisions and collaboration between carriers and shippers to reduce CO2 emissions. It is also a platform for companies to share best practices, promote innovations and communicate sustainability improvements on European road freight.
