Christofer Kohn. "Towards CO2 efficient centralised distribution", Linköping Studies in Science and Technology, Dissertations, No. 1220, International Graduate School of Management and Engineering.

Doctoral Dissertation by Christofer Kohn, partner in the Green Logistics Consultants Group and supply chain consultant, Establish, Sweden.

This dissertation treats a topic that has received increasing attention as of late, namely that of the environment and in particular increasing levels of CO2 emissions caused by transport. The aim of the dissertation is to explain how a shipper, through various measures, can reduce transport-related CO2 emissions when centralising a distribution system and how this affects the provision of cost efficient customer service. Earlier research has stated that this type of structural change is considered unfavourable from an environmental viewpoint as it increases the amount of transport work generated by the system and thereby transport-related CO2 emissions. The argument that is made in this dissertation, however, is that transport work is only one aspect to consider when evaluating how transport-related CO2 emissions are affected by this type of structural change. The reason for this being that a change in structure and management of the same can enable a shipper to make other changes within the distribution system that can prove beneficial from an environmental perspective as they decrease the amount of CO2 emissions per tonne kilometre.

SmartWay International Conference

US EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership is an innovative public/private program designed to encourage voluntary adoption of fuel-saving and greenhouse gases-reducing technologies and strategies in the freight sector.

The successful development and continued growth of the EPA's SmartWay Transport Partnership has spurred interest from governments, NGOs and academics around the globe. In an effort address this growing interest, EPA is hosting a three day conference, "The International SmartWay Transportation Summit...Transforming the Global Supply Chain" to support other governments and agencies in developing "SmartWay-like" programs.

Erik van Agtmaal, managing partner of the The Green Logistics Consultants Group, has been invited by the US EPA to participate on the panel  "Supply Chain Accounting and Harmonization of Metrics" together with  David Rich from the World Resources Institute and representatives from Chiquita and Maersk.

Dates: Tuesday, December 2, 2008 through Thursday, December 4, 2008.  Location: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Hosted by SmartWay Transport and U of M SMART (Sustainable Mobility and Accessibility Research Transformation) and UMTRI (University Of Michigan Transportation Research Institute).

PROJECT TO FOSTER COOPERATION FOR THE CALCULATION OF EMISSIONS OF GOODS TRANSPORT AND SUPPLY CHAINS

A current project of the Green Logistics Consultants Group is to foster cooperation and co-ordination between organisations and initiatives worldwide to (i) agree a worldwide accepted framework for the calculation of emissions of goods transport and supply chains and (ii) to create an international database with international and national information on emissions factors and logistics data.

More and more carbon footprint calculators are available on the internet. The outcome of these calculators differs widely as various methodologies and emissions conversion factors are used. This is also the case for internet tools for measuring a business’s carbon emissions and between the results of specific academic research. The lack of standardisation also creates a problem for application vendors intending to incorporate environmental data and analytics capabilities in supply chain modelling and planning software.

The advantage of a standard procedure and methodology to quantify emissions from freight transport activities at the corporate level are obvious. It facilitates:

  • Companies to launch logistics environmental initiatives

  • The exchange of environmental data within supply chains

  • Collaborative projects

  • The measurement of progress

  • Verification and third party audits

  • Benchmarking opportunities

  • Suppliers to meet environmental requirements

  • The use of reported emissions for academic research

  • The integration of standard environmental data into future transport and supply chain modelling applications

  • The establishment of voluntary emission registries

  • The introduction of certification and labels

  • Disclosure of data at firm levels to provide valuable information for public policy making.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORT FORUM - LEIPZIG - 28 - 30 May 2008

In May 2008, the first International Transport Forum will be held in Leipzig, Germany. It is the most important international platform for transport, logistics and mobility. The forum is supported by transport ministers from 51 countries and will be a global meeting place for key players from government and politics, business, industry, research and the civil society.

German Federal Chancellor, Angela Merkel will deliver a keynote address at the Forum 2008.  Among the speakers,  are eminent industry leaders, such as Thomas Enders, CEO, Airbus; Thierry Morin, CEO, Valeo; leading academics like Professor Julia King, author of the recent report "The King Review on low carbon cars"; and key figures of international agencies such as Angel Gurriá, OECD Secretary General and Nobuo Tanaka, IEA Executive Director.

Every year, the International Transport Forum will focus on a topic of worldwide strategic importance. Securing energy supply and tackling climate change are currently the key challenges that the transport sector is faced with. For this reason, the topic of "Transport and Energy - the Challenge of Climate Change" will be on this year's agenda of the International Transport Forum (28 to 30 May 2008).

Erik van Agtmaal, Managing Partner of the Green Logistics Consultants Group, has been invited to speak at the Workshop Reducing CO2 Emission in Goods transport. Other eminent participants are :

Werner Rothengatter, Universität Karlsruhe;  Alan McKinnon, Heriot Watt University;  Robert Sausen, European Conference of Transport Research Institutes;  Hasse Johansson, Scania;  Marc Juhel, The World Bank;  Ralph Gakenheimer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology;  Sanjivi Sundar, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI);  Manfred Breithaupt, GTZ;  Sergio Sanchez, Clean Air Institute; Jan-Anne Annema, Netherlands Institute for Transport,  Keith Ulrich, DHL;  Sara Paulsson, Bombardier Transportation.

FIRST NEW ZEALAND BUSINESS REGISTERS ON THE CLIMATE NEUTRAL NETWORK

Innovative management and a dedication to sustainability have seen Sempre Avanti Consulting (SAC) become the first New Zealand Business to be registered on the United Nation’s Climate Neutral Network. The Network was established earlier this year as channel to highlight innovative carbon-neutral initiatives from around the world. It also acts as a forum for businesses to network ideas and strategies to help achieve real cuts in their greenhouse gas emissions.

SAC Consulting Manager Gordon Shaw says that the Network’s goals fit perfectly with the company’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability. “In 2006, we made it our goal to become a certified carbon neutral consulting practice within five years. Our first step was to join the carboNZero programme as a participant.
This meant measuring our carbon footprint, then making real changes in our business policies to help reduce it. “Seeing how much air travel contributed to our overall footprint was a real eyeopener. Now, wherever possible, we fly with airlines offering carbon offset programmes, as well as staying at environmentally sustainable hotels.

“Transport on the ground is another area where we are cutting emissions. Our vehicle purchasing policy now includes hybrid vehicles, Euro 4/5 standards, and the use of biofuels. Airport transfers are done using the most carbon efficient transport available, including trains, buses and hybrid vehicle taxi services. “Joining the Climate Neutral Network is a natural extension of our participation in carboNZero. With its focus on raising the global profile of business environmental sustainability, we believe the Network is the best place to get new ideas, share information and show the world our commitment to stemming the tide of climate change.

“We are passionate about our sustainability practices—green is good. I urge other New Zealand businesses to show their commitment to the environment by participating in programmes like the Climate Neutral Network.”
